Flora Kenza Nacer (1995) – Theatre director and writer
Vision
In my work, I explore the subconscious and emotional space of stories. I see theater as a playing field for stretching a state between dream and reality and being together in this undefined space. My work often starts from the personal, in conversation with others. I embrace the form of theater by being transparent about the fact that an actor takes on a different role in the here and now to invent something that a group of unfamiliar people are watching, which puts them back in touch with what they have to invent in that moment. As an artist, I attempt to take the viewer from looking at embodied experience or position within the work. I use the imagination and especially the visual and sensory aspect of theater to bring people to other layers of themselves. Where feelings and associations are leading. In this way I try to touch the depth of the every day, to put a magnifying glass on social dynamics between people, until it becomes alienating and therefore just recognizable. I believe there is great power in watching someone else's story, although I believe there is an even greater power in experiencing a staged situation together.
Work
In January 2024, I directed my first graduate performance I am the Wind a play by the Norwegian Writer Jon Fosse. Fosse's body of work focuses on the unsaid and opens up a feeling and subconscious space. In my adaptation, I want the audience to make an active movement from watching to feeling by having them make a literal movement as the conversation progresses. I am currently working on a 3D installation from my texts À la recherche de Quoi? Where I delve into the subconscious trauma of France's colonial history. In my second graduation work 'The Multiple Room' which was played in May 2024 I share my search for the captivity of language and the polyphony of reality. For this work, I wrote my own stage text.
Studies
I studied at the directing program at the Academy for Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam (2021-2024).
In addition, I did several residencies: the Writers' Residency of deBuren, Paris (2023), Research Residency, Isabelle Eberhardt, The Markets, Brussels (2021), Free Residency, PAF, St-Erme (2024) and Writers' Residency, Villa Buitenlust Amsterdam (2024).
