De Tong van de Zee – Hidden stories, dreams, and subconscious entanglements of mothers and daughters
De Tong van de Zee is a hyper-intimate montage performance that takes the viewer into the life stories, memories, and subconscious dynamics between mothers and daughters. For this project, I engaged in conversation with five mothers and their daughters about hidden stories, dreams, and subconscious entanglements. I translated these conversations into associative short performances and connected them with personal video footage from the mothers' and daughters' family archives.
The audience is welcomed into the dressing room. There their hands are cleaned by one of the performers according to a Surinamese washing ritual. After this, they are brought to the stage blindfolded by a mother or daughter and tied to a long rope in the middle of the installation. When the video begins, they take off their blindfolds and are surrounded by sea. Then different stories follow and the mothers and daughters slowly become visible.
